Recliners are awesome pieces of furniture that complement the interior of a house or any facility where it is placed. With or without recliners, since it’s a bit pricey, you can also do some reclining as an exercise. “Supta Virasana” or the reclining hero pose targets different groups of muscle as one slowly bend parallel to the ground. Here are the steps in doing this hero reclining pose:
- Kneel on the mat. See to it that your legs have hip-width space apart. The body should be a little tilted forward. Inhale and exhale while positioning yourself.
- Slowly try to sit on the space between your heels. You may place your hands on your lap and knees for support. Do this movement slowly and gently to prevent injuries like tearing of the muscle.
- If you cannot sit on the floor completely, you may use a pillow or a block as support to your upper body.
- See to it that your upper body is perpendicular to your legs and feet. Straighten your back to stretch muscles and promote good posture. This is called the hero pose.
- Prepare for reclining. Breathe deeply to relax your body. It may take five counts to inhale and another five counts for exhalation. This can be repeated as many times as you want.
- Place your palms behind your feet. While preparing to lean back, see to it that your arms, hands, and palms will also move slowly. Your knees should not lift from the mat.
- Slowly lean back. This will continue until the position of your torso is almost parallel to the ground. You may continue the breathing exercises while doing this.
- This time, your elbows should touch the mat while the forearm is flat on the mat.
- Lower the rest of the body to the mat to complete the reclining hero position. You can also do some stretching on your arms.
- Use all of your muscles while releasing oneself from the pose. Get up with your arms and elbow. Slowly push yourself until you are in the upright position.
Discomfort is normal when doing the reclining hero pose but the pain is not. If you can’t totally lean back, do not force yourself to avoid tearing of muscles and back pain. This position is a bit advanced compared to others so it is fine if you can’t do it on the first try.
