TRAVELLING WITH THE MOTORMAN ON THE SNAEFELL MOUNTAIN RAILWAY

Celebrating 100 years of service on Britain’s first mountain railway. In 1895 state of the art electric tramcars ‘conquered’ the mountain and today the line is just as impressive. A brief introduction includes historic photographs and archive of the green and cream era and the years pending investment. The story is brought up to date with a journey to the summit today with the Motorman: plus lineside footage (even in some of the most remote locations) and spectacular aerial views. Interludes include the mountain sub-station ‘switch-on’ , TT action, CAA railcars and new car shed. The programme concludes with 16 minutes of Caledonia’s return to the mountain line that it helped to build 100 years earlier, including, the first successful ascent to the summit with the MER trailer, in cab footage on the descent and the first public runs . . . spectacular!

TALLYLLYN RAILWAY THROUGH THE YEARS
Featuring the L.T. Catchpole and P.B. Whitehouse Collections

A look at the delightful narrow gauge railway which proved a railway could be restored and run by enthusiasts. This film serves as a fitting tribute to magnificent achievements of the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society. Contents include: Rails from Bryneglwys - A review of the railway’s history in its first 85 years up the death of its owner Sir Henry Haydn Jones in 1950. The route, locomotives, rolling stock and Bryneglwys quarry: the railway’s raison d’être are all covered. L.T. Catchpole’s 1938 archive shows Talyllyn with a mixed train at Abergynolwyn before quarry operation is investigated. We return on a mixed train to Tywyn, Dai Jones, one of just two employees on the railway in 1950 reminisces about his family’s long association with the line. Patrick Whitehouse’s colour film of 1949 complements B&W scenes of the desperate state of the railway in 1950. Life in the Old Dolgoch Yet? - Dai Jones and civil engineer John Bate talk us through over 40 years of preservation highlights which include the early years, the arrival of the Corris engines, Tywyn Wharf rebuild, centenary celebrations, Abergynolwyn’s new station and the Nant Gwernol extension. Railway Adventure - A Talyllyn trip - A combination of seven decades of footage provide a varied look at the 7¼ mile route to Nant Gwernol.
