BR DIVERSITY - THE TRANSITION FROM STEAM

BRITISH RAILWAYS 1948 - 1994 From Nationalisation to Privatisation
Volume One - From Goods to Railfreight

The Post-War decimated railway, pick-up goods and shunting operations, traditional freight activity in Scotland, the centralisation of freight marshalling and early bulk flows, major Post-War capital projects - Whitemoor, Wath and Thornton yards, containerisation and Woodhead electrification. On the motive power side, Austerity types, GW standardisation and LMS practice (the basis for the BR Standards) is discussed before the family of new freight steam locomotives, the headlong rush towards dieselisation in 1955, the successes and disasters of the modernisation programme, the co-existence of steam and diesels, and ultimately the end of steam and subsequent developments. There's even a presentation by Dr Beeching - wise words? . . . we'll let you decide on that one. Locations range from Rural Scotland to Industrial Tyneside.

The demise of non-standard diesel classes takes us into corporate days (with a steam interlude on the Vale of Rheidol) and ultimately to Sectorisation and the new beginning?
