ALONG WEST HIGHLAND LINES -
An Insight into Two Classic Scottish Railways |
The railways of the West Highland's are today an amalgam of former rival
routes, the truncated main line to
Oban, and the West Highland. An introduction to the two classic lines is
followed by a journey along the
remaining section of the Callander & Oban Railway with ScotRail driver
Michael Magnay. As we travel west
from Crianlarich conversation includes Royal connections, Clan rivalry,
the unique Pass of Brander
semaphores and the Ballachulish branch.
Side two looks at the
West Highland today with signalling contrasts
explained during visits to Fort William Jn, and the RETB nerve centre at
Banavie, where signalmen oversee
over 180 miles of railway north of Craigendoran Jn. We conclude with the
steam operation to Mallaig joining
the driver on the footplate, before an insight into Glenfinnan Railway
Museum. 75014 has the last word. |
