The Indian Railways has welcomed the idea of a new technology referred to as head on generation (HOG) that will supply power to coaches from the overhead electric (OHE). HOG is basically an electrical power supply system in which the power that caters to the hotel load of train like air conditioning, train lighting and fannage operates on electrical power supply.
This system will replace the use of Generators and use efficient electric methods. The rail sector has witnessed significant progress and managed to convert about 342 trains into the HOG system. This move has saved about Rs800 crore with a substantial win in reducing the huge noise and dangerous fumes emission. Overall, a greener environment has been accomplished through a cost-effective arrangement.
What does the HOG system encompass?
With standby silent generators in place, the new system is flexible to cater to any emergencies for the two generator cars. There will also be an LSLRD that will supply the entire train with power from the overhead. It has a guardroom and the capacity to accommodate colossal luggage and more passengers. With these gadgets put in place, the HOG arrangement will cost Rs6 for one unit, much cheaper than the previous Rs36 per unit.
What is the Take of the Management Regarding the New System?
Rajesh Agarwal, a member of the managing team, said that it would take about one year to convert all LHB trains into HOG. He acknowledged the milestones the rail industry had achieved, saving about Rs800 crore per year.
This progress was due to the conversion of the 342 trains that have been converted into HOG. He hopes that other LHB 284 trains will also follow suit and undergo the modification into the electrical system by the end of the year.
As for the compliance, the rail industry expects all coaches that will undergo this transition to be compliant with the set guidelines. For instance, field officers will direct the zonal railways’ conversion process to check if all the set rules are adhered to.
Is the HOG System Really Efficient?
The HOG system consists of an electrical power system that supplies power for various uses. The power is used for lighting, catering, air conditioning, and other activities that might need power usage in the train. The power is generated from a locomotive that eliminates the heavy Generators that are slow and inefficient. The electrical system uses low amounts of diesel, therefore helps in reducing the number of gas emissions.
The new system will eliminate the previous LHB project, which was initiated in 1996. The system used two power cars that had to utilize two DG sets on each end. The Linke Hofmann Busch Company manufactured these coaches until 2017, when the industry felt that the cost of Generators in the DG set was too high.
The operating expenditure kept on growing because of the increased use of diesel amounts. Therefore, there was a need to look for an alternative that would scale down the costs and decrease diesel consumption for increased efficiency.
